Chaitén

Chaitén is a town in Palena province, in the Los Lagos Region, known for having risen again after the eruption of the volcano of the same name in 2008, which forced the evacuation and rebuilding of much of the town. Today, Chaitén is the gateway to Pumalín Park, one of the largest private conservation parks in the world, created by philanthropist Douglas Tompkins.

Pumalín Park offers ancient Valdivian forest, volcanoes, fjords, and top-tier trails, establishing the area as a world reference point for nature conservation. Chaitén is also the connection point between the Carretera Austral and Hornopirén and the rest of the Patagonian road network, via ferry crossings.

This post-volcanic rebirth, combined with its pristine natural surroundings, has made Chaitén an increasingly valued destination for nature tourism and investment in untouched land.
