History and Tradition
Futaleufú (from the Mapudungun fütra: “big” and lewfu: “river”), or “Big River”, has roots dating back to 1912, when the first Chilean settlers, such as the family of Ceferino Moraga, arrived from Chiloé. The municipality was officially founded on April 9, 1929, and its evolution from an isolated settlement to a vibrant tourist destination is a testament to the effort and resilience of its inhabitants.
In addition to its rich history, Futaleufú keeps alive the gaucho and huaso traditions characteristic of its local culture. Places like the Espolón and El Azul sectors are ideal for connecting with this heritage, enjoying mate, horseback riding, and the hospitality of its people.
